2023 ESEH Summer School: Climate in History

The anthropogenic climate change and related environmental changes will affect, and have already affected, human societies. Examples from the past can offer detailed insights on the complexity of these climate-society interactions. However, accessing relevant climate data and carrying related statistical analyses can hinder scholars from the humanities to include climatic aspects in their studies.

The ESEH 2023 Summer School ‘Climate’ invites young researchers from all fields of historical/archaeological research who have no or modest prior knowledge on climate sciences or working with climate data.

The Summer School is open to young researchers (PhD students and early postdocs) worldwide.
The deadline for applications is 31 October 2022.

Info

The Summer School consists of lectures, presentations, and hands on-exercises. The participants will learn about climate variability of the historical past and the basics of climate reconstruction, model, and early instrumental observation materials. All Summer School participants are expected to give a short presentation of their research, which is followed by in-depth discussion with other participants and lecturers. The presentation instructions will be provided to the accepted Summer School participants in early 2023. In addition, we will conduct together a small climate history research project over the course, which will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal later in 2023. The students will be awarded 5 ECTS for their participation.
