Environmental and climate history including rural history, climate studies in general as well as environmental anthropology and sustainability studies, are perfectly established at the University of Bern. Both climate studies and sustainability studies are two of the core research focuses of the University. The interdisciplinary Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR) and the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) bring together scholars from various disciplines and faculties and foster inter- and transdisciplinary research. One of the «founding fathers» of ESEH, Prof. Christian Pfister, had been one of the first professors of economic, social and environmental history in Europe (1998-2009).
